Description
No. 10 The Avenue is a bungalow built in 1936 by M.P. Reavell for the Fountains Abbey Settlers Society. The building is constructed of brick, rendered and whitewashed, with a pantile roof and an L-plan layout. It features three bays, with a central renewed part-glazed door flanked by a 12-pane sash window and two small windows to the right. The left bay projects and includes a 12-pane sash under a gable with plain bargeboards. Each part of the roof has a ridge stack. The left return displays a 12-pane sash and a gable with plain bargeboards, while the right return has a doorway and a small window under a similar gable. The three-bay rear elevation features 12-pane sashes, with the left end having paired windows.
This bungalow is listed for its historical interest. The Fountains Abbey Settlers Society was founded in 1934 by Commander Clare Vyner to create a rural settlement for unemployed craftsmen from Tyneside. A total of 77 houses were constructed, most with attached plots of one-eighth acre, and were rented by families from Gateshead and other areas. However, the initiative was not entirely successful, as many tenants returned to Tyneside shortly after moving in.
