Description
The Square, which includes numbers 5 and 7 and the Village Shop, is a shop and adjacent houses built in 1936 by M.P. Reavell for the Fountains Abbey Settlers Society. The structure is made of brick, rendered and colourwashed, with a Lakeland slate roof. It consists of one storey plus attics, with two bays for each unit. There is a plinth, and the slightly-recessed centre houses the shop, featuring central half-glazed double doors flanked by large iron-framed shop windows. The building has flat-topped roof dormers with renewed glazing and end stacks. The houses on either side have renewed doors in the end bays, one with a large window and the other with a small window, along with a flat-topped roof dormer that also has renewed glazing. This building is included for its historic interest as part of the original Fountains Abbey Settlers Society development.
