Description
The animal shelter on the south side of Swarland Park is a cattle or deer shelter, likely built in the early 19th century. It is constructed from rubble with cut dressings and features one brick pier. The roof is made of Welsh slate and has a lead cap and finial. The building has a circular plan, divided into quadrants by full-height cross walls. The exterior is characterized by round columns with block capitals that alternate with similar half-columns at the ends of the cross walls, and it has a steep conical roof topped with a moulded finial, giving it an overall appearance reminiscent of a detached gin-gang. Inside, the roof structure of each quadrant includes diagonally-set ties that carry struts to the principal rafter, along with elbowed purlins. Later metal sheet infill between the piers is not considered of interest.
