Description

The animal shelter located at the south-west corner of Swarland Park is a cattle or deer shelter, likely built in the early 19th century. It is constructed from rubble with cut dressings and features one brick pier. The roof is made of Welsh slate, topped with a lead cap and finial. The building has a circular plan, divided into quadrants by full-height cross walls. The exterior showcases round columns with block capitals, alternating with similar half columns at the ends of the cross walls, and is topped with a steep conical roof that has a moulded finial. Inside, the roof structure of each quadrant includes diagonally-set ties that carry struts to the principal rafter, along with elbowed purlins.
