Description

Villa Farmhouse is a house built around 1820, reputedly designed by John Dobson for Thomas Jamieson of Newcastle, and it incorporates some 18th-century fabric. The building was altered around 1968. It is constructed of ashlar stone, except for the lower courses which are made of squared 18th-century stone, and it has a Scottish slate roof. The house has a square plan and features a symmetrical west front that is two storeys high with three bays. The first floor is slightly recessed, and there is a central six-panel door set within a 20th-century pedimented surround. The windows are 12-pane sashes, some of which have been replaced. The first-floor windows have moulded sills and sunk aprons, and the central window, flanked by flat pilasters, was originally the main entrance, accessed by a straight external stair until the alterations in 1968. The eaves are adorned with a bold moulded cornice, and the roof is tall and almost pyramidal, featuring a pair of stepped and corniced stacks at the apex. The right return has three bays and the rear has four bays, both showing similar window styles. The left return has a central renewed door on the ground floor and end bay windows, with a blind window at the first-floor level.
