Description

16 and 17 Quay Walls are two houses built in the late 18th century and around 1870. They are constructed of coursed rubble and ashlar, topped with a slate roof and featuring four gable stacks. The south front has three storeys and three windows. There is a central doorway with a six-panel door and a plain fanlight, framed by a moulded ashlar Doric pilaster surround and topped with an entablature. Above this is a round-headed plain sash window with a moulded ashlar surround and a pediment. Another similar window with a flat hood is located above that. To the right, there is a three-storey square bay window with four plain sashes on each floor. The ground floor windows are adorned with semi-circular panels featuring carved foliage, while the windows on the two upper storeys have carved swags above them. Each storey is accented with pilasters at the corners, featuring Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian styles at the upper level, all topped with dentilated eaves. On the left side, there are pairs of plain sashes on each floor, decorated similarly to the right bays. The north front is five storeys high, incorporating an earlier building and mainly featuring plain sash windows.
