Description

No. 105 Newgate Street is a house built in the early 18th century, remodeled around 1760 and internally updated around 1810. It features dressed stone with a Welsh slate roof and old brick chimneys. The building has three storeys and three bays. The mid-18th century door is adorned with decorative panels and a patterned fanlight, set within a surround that includes attached Ionic columns and an ogee hood. The ground floor has 4-pane sash windows, the first floor has 12-pane sashes, and the second floor has 9-pane casements. Blocked, narrower early 18th century windows can be seen on the left side. The roof is gabled with flat coping and end stacks.

Inside, there is a staircase with stick balusters and turned newels, featuring a two-stage handrail with a fluted lower rail separated from a rounded upper rail by small turned knobs. On the first floor, there are two archways framing doors to the bedrooms; to the left is a broad elliptical arch with attached Roman Doric columns, and to the right is a similar round-headed doorway. The door surrounds, window frames, and all other woodwork are decorated with fluted designs. There is a fireplace in the first-floor room that includes attached Ionic colonettes, a Greek key frieze, and swags.
