Description

The grey monument in the garden, located 100 metres east of Morwick Hall, dates from 1786. It is made of squared stone with an inscribed slab of fossiliferous limestone. The rectangular structure measures 1.3 by 0.7 metres and stands 3.5 metres high. The front features fluted pilasters that flank the inscription:

"In memory of Catharine Maria Grey who died the 24th of June 1786 in the 34 Year of her Age

Blessed are the Dead which die in the Lord Rev. 14-15 I know that my Redeemer liveth Job 19-25"

The monument has a swept top and an urn finial decorated with a leaf pattern and a fluted band. Historically, Catharine Grey chose to be buried in the garden without any funeral service, as she had always been denied entry to the Hall by her father-in-law, John Grey, who passed away in 1783.
