Description
The British Rail East Coast Main Line Viaduct over the River Coquet is a railway viaduct completed in 1849 or 1850, designed by Robert Stephenson for the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway. It is constructed of rock-faced stone featuring rock-faced and margined rusticated voussoirs and cut dressings. The structure consists of nine segmental arches supported by tall rectangular-plan piers, which have sunk arched panels on their inner faces and twin pilasters at each end. The viaduct has moulded imposts and a top cornice. The river pier is notable for its rounded cutwaters topped with a dome. There is later concrete underpinning to the arch soffits and girder supports. The southern part of the viaduct is located in Warkworth parish.
