Description
The Grey Memorial, located 30 metres south-west of the Church of St. Michael, is a free-standing cross that serves as a graveyard monument, erected in 1917. It is constructed from ashlar stone and features a low panelled wall with a central inscribed tablet dedicated to Albert Henry George, the 4th Earl Grey, who died in 1917. The tablet notes his roles as Administrator of Rhodesia from 1896 to 1898, Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland from 1899 to 1904, and Governor General of Canada from 1904 to 1911, as well as mentioning his wife, Alice, who passed away in 1944. Above the tablet is a Celtic cross set on a tall tapered shaft. There are additional inscriptions for later family members located at the rear of the memorial. This monument is included for its historic interest.
