Description
The goods shed located to the east of Hexham Railway Station was built in the late 1830s for the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway and is currently used as a warehouse for West Cumberland Farmers Ltd. The structure features a timber frame with a sandstone wall on the east side and was originally open-sided, but has since been infilled with brick. It has a concrete-tiled roof and sandstone plinths. The exterior is mostly blank, but the parallel narrow roof ranges indicate five aisles, which are supported internally by timber piers. Each aisle consists of three long bays, with the southern aisles extending slightly to the east. Cast iron brackets are used for the tie beams, and there are cast iron sockets at the bases of the piers, which are bolted to bedstones. This building is considered an unusual structure, possibly unique in the North of England, and is included for its structural and historical interest.
