2.

Railway goods shed, late 1830s for the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway, now a ware- house for West Cumberland Farmers Ltd. Timber framed with sandstone east wall; once open-sided, now infilled with brick. Concrete-tiled roof. Sandstone plinths. Externally largely blank, but the parallel narrow roof ranges indicate the 5 aisles, supported internally on timber piers, each aisle of 3 long bays, the southern aisles extended slightly to east. Cast iron brackets to tie beams, cast iron sockets to bases of piers, which are bolted to bedstones. An unusual struc- ture, possibly unique in the North of England. Included for structural and histo- rical interest.
