Overtrack Signal Box To East Of Hexham Railway Station

The overtrack signal box, built around 1896 for the North Eastern Railway, is located to the east of Hexham Railway Station. It is constructed from brick and steel, featuring a boarded and glazed superstructure on a steel frame, topped with a slate roof and a brick chimney. The south elevation displays two brick arches, with the brickwork extending into the superstructure between two large boarded panels. A steel external staircase leads to a glazed door on the right side. The structure has a low-pitched pyramidal roof with a corniced central stack.

From the brick wall, two wide elliptical steel arches span the track and support the gantry beams. At the north end, two similar round arches between open steel piers complete the support for an open platform, which has lattice iron railing, situated to the north of the enclosed box. The enclosed box features weather-boarding below continuous glazing on the north, east, and west sides. This signal box is one of only two remaining of its type on the line.
