Description

Brundall Signal Box is a signal box built in 1883 for the Great Eastern Railway. It features timber construction and a slate-clad roof. The building is located to the south-east of the station, on the south-west side of the railway tracks, and has a rectangular plan.

The exterior of the signal box includes a pitched roof adorned with ornamental ridge tiles and finials, along with decorative bargeboards, although the bargeboards are missing from the south-east gable. The timber cladding is designed to resemble stone blocks, arranged in panels formed by the building's framework. The rear (south-west) side is finished in plain horizontal timber, likely because it is not visible from the track, and has a small timber-clad projection at the operating room level that was added to provide lavatory facilities. The box is painted in cream and green, reflecting the colours of the Great Eastern Railway. It features large horizontally sliding sash windows on three sides: the windows on the north-east (front) and south-east sides still have their distinctive margin lights, while those on the north-west side have been replaced with six-light sashes. The front elevation includes two large rectangular timber windows with four vertical glazing bars for the locking room. A window cleaning canopy encircles the front and sides of the box, and access to the operating room is provided by a flight of metal steps on the north-west side. The timber door, which has been replaced, features a glazed upper panel.

Inside, the signal box retains its 1927 lever frame. Although a false ceiling has been added, the original timber-clad ceiling remains intact. There are also late 20th-century fitted cupboards and a desk along the south-west wall.
