Description
The water tower, built in the 1850s by Peter Tate, is located to the southeast of Hexham Railway Station. It features a coursed, tooled sandstone base and a galvanised iron tank that replaced the original cast iron tank. The structure is designed in a classical style and has a stone base that is one and a half storeys high, with a layout of two by three bays. The south front displays two keyed moulded arches, with moulded inposts positioned between square angle piers that have higher capitals. A moulded cornice runs along the top. The half-storey, constructed of large main sandstone blocks, was added later to increase the height. The side elevations consist of three bays, while the rear has two bays and are simpler in design, featuring tooled and margined pilasters with moulded capitals. All elevations have openings that are now filled with herringbone-tooled sandstone. Above the base, there is a panelled tank.
