Description
The former goods shed, located on the east side of the railway immediately north of the B1340, dates from the mid-19th century and is likely the work of Benjamin Green for the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway Company. It is constructed from rock-faced stone with raised ashlar dressings and features a Welsh slate roof in a Free Tudor style.
The east elevation consists of two bays, with a chamfered plinth and large segmental-pointed arches set in alternating-block surrounds. The eaves overhang on raking timber brackets, and the gables are coped on moulded kneelers, topped with ball finials. The returns display similar arches and a boarded elliptical-arched gable opening beneath a cornice, with a large stepped buttress at the east end. The rear elevation features a boarded door, two 2-light mullioned windows with 16-pane casements, and a large stepped buttress at each end.
This goods shed is a rare example of an unaltered early goods shed, with a similar structure found at Acklington station.
