Description
The farmbuilding group located to the north of Christon Bank Farmhouse dates from the second quarter of the 19th century, with some later 19th-century additions. It is constructed from squared rubble, featuring tooled-and-margined quoins and dressings, and has Welsh slate roofs. The layout consists of an L-shaped two-storey barn and byre, which is connected to a longer L-shaped range at its southeast corner; this end section serves as a cartshed and granary. There are four single-storey wings extending southward, with the two on the left forming a U-shaped yard with the first building, while the other two extend forward from the second building.
The elevations facing the main yard include a single-storey west range that has two segmental arches at the left end, along with a doorway and a small window. The north range features two segmental arches with blocked windows above, and a returned gable to the left, which has a white brick arched panel containing pigeon openings. The east range contains two doorways.
In the western yard, the north range has inserted sliding doors and two segmental arches in each side range. The central yard shows two segmental arches with part-slatted windows above in the north range, and features a late 19th-century three-bay open cattle shed on the east side, supported by cast-iron columns on concrete bases. The eastern yard has two segmental arches, with a six-pane casement and part-slatted window above on the north side, and a similar three-bay cattle shed on the west.
The east-facing cartshed and granary displays a six-bay segmental arcade, with four part-slatted windows above, and a part-slatted granary window at the south end. All windows are framed with alternating-block surrounds and slightly projecting sills. The roofs are predominantly hipped, except for the gable of the dovecote. An attached shed to the north, which has an asbestos roof, is not of interest.
