Description

The former Co-operative Shop, built in the second quarter of the 20th century, is located on Dial Place in Warkworth. It features tooled ashlar stonework and a red tiled roof, with an irregular three-fronted plan on a corner site. The south-facing front has two storeys and three bays. The ground floor includes attached columns, paired at the ends, which support a moulded wooden fascia and cornice. The central entrance consists of half-glazed double doors flanked by metal-framed shop windows. Above, there are three twelve-pane sash windows and a moulded eaves cornice. The hipped roof has a corniced ridge stack.

The right return, facing Bridge Street, is similar but has a wood-framed shop window in place of the central doors and a stack at the right end. The four-bay left return, facing Dial Place, features a first-floor sill band, a part-glazed door in the second bay, and a twelve-pane sash in a blind doorway to the right. There are boarded double doors with an eight-pane overlight at the left end and a blind shop window at the right end, with twelve-pane sashes above, except for a slatted window at the left end. The single-storey section to the far left is part of No. 20 Dial Place.

This building is a notable example of a small inter-war Co-operative shop, well designed to fit its important site.
