Description
The Mason's Arms is an inn that dates from the 17th century or earlier, with alterations made in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The lower part of the front is rendered, while the upper part is made of squared stone, both finished in cream wash. The rear elevation features rubble that is partly rendered, except for the north-west wing which is squared stone. The building has Welsh slate roofs with brick stacks.
It stands two storeys high with three irregular bays. The right bays contain an old door with six fielded panels. The ground floor has plain sash windows, and above are 12-pane sashes. The gables are coped on moulded kneelers, with an old banded stack at the left end and a rebuilt stack at the right end.
On the rear elevation, the centre bay has two-light mullioned windows, although the upper window has lost its mullion. It features a steep coped gable topped with a worn finial cross. The left projecting wing has two 12-pane sashes on the first floor and a hipped roof.
Inside, the ground floor has old transverse beams, one of which bears a painted inscription stating, "On the 8th of Oct 1715 the EARL OF DERWENTWATER & 40 of his followers Dined in this HOUSE." The flat-roofed single-storey parts at the rear are not considered of interest.
