Description
Hawkhope Farmhouse is a house that has been divided into two dwellings. It dates from the 16th to early 17th century and originally served as a bastle, with a mid-19th century extension added. The building is constructed of random rubble with a boulder plinth, while the extension features ashlar stonework and has Welsh slate roofs.
The bastlehouse is two storeys high plus attics and has three irregular bays. There is an almost central half-glazed door set in a slightly-chamfered surround, with sash windows on either side. Above the door, there is a small six-pane fixed window in a partly-blocked opening that was originally a first-floor doorway. To the right of the door is a twelve-pane sash window, and to the left is a sixteen-pane sash window. The roof is gabled and features 19th-century dormers, with flat coping and a corniced stack at the right end.
The extension to the right is also two storeys and has two broad bays with a central doorway. It includes a gabled stone porch and sash windows, with a gabled roof and a corniced end stack.
At the rear, the bastlehouse has a continuous outshut. The interior walls are approximately five feet thick on the ground floor and around four feet thick on the first floor.
