Description

Falstone Farm is a house, incorporating a bastle, likely dating from around 1604. It was raised by the addition of an extra storey in the mid-18th century and extended to the right in the early 19th century.

The older section is constructed of large, random masonry with a boulder plinth, while the 19th-century section is ashlar. The roof is covered in Welsh slate, with banded end stacks and flat copings. The building has an irregular arrangement of openings.

A central 19th-century porch with a door is situated on the right return. To the left of the porch is a 17th-century window that was lengthened to create a doorway, with the mullion removed during the 18th century. Sash windows in chamfered surrounds are positioned on the first and second floors. Disturbed masonry on the first floor suggests a former first-floor doorway. The right-hand bay of the 19th-century extension features a 16-pane sash window on the ground floor, a similar window on the first floor, and a shorter 12-pane sash window above.

The interior retains an original ground-floor doorway, now located within a later extension. It has a roll-moulded lintel and right jamb, with the left jamb cut away. The lintel is inscribed with letters and the date ABCDEFG 1604 HK. The ground floor of the bastle contains a high, round barrel vault, partly removed at the east end to accommodate a mid-18th-century staircase with turned balusters and square knops. The walls are approximately 5 feet thick. A continuous 18th-century outshut extends to the rear of the building.
