Description

Milepost pier, dating from the mid-19th century, located approximately 20 yards west of the Great Whittington road end in Matfen. It is constructed of ashlar stone and serves as the end pier to a wall. The structure is square with a pyramidal cap, and the sides function as a milepost. The north face is inscribed with "Whittington 1¼ miles Hexham 9 miles," while the east face reads "Corbridge 6 miles Newcastle 15 miles."
