Description
The Meldon War Memorial is located outside the front wall of the former School House, about 130 meters north of the Church of St John the Baptist and approximately 75 meters north of Meldon Village Farmhouse. It features a large stone pedestal with a moulded top, which stands on a two-stepped circular base. The front of the pedestal is shaped like a shield.
This shield is inscribed with a dedicatory message that reads: "ERECTED TO COMMEMORATE THE VICTORY AND IN GRATEFUL THANKS FOR THE SAFE RETURN OF ALL THOSE MEN WHO LEFT THE PARISH TO SERVE IN THE GREAT WAR." The years 1914 and 1919 are carved on either side of the base of the shield.
