Description

Portico House is a cottage with a summerhouse and flanking walls, located in Wallington Demesne. The walls date from the 17th century and have been much repaired, while the cottage itself was built around 1750, likely by Daniel Garrett. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar with a slate roof and features brick walls in English garden wall bond on a stone plinth. The building is two storeys high with one wide bay.

The ground floor is recessed behind a Roman Doric screen, which is distyle in antis. There is a central six-panel door with a tall overlight and a modillion cornice above it. Four pilasters rise from the screen cornice to a first-floor sill band, where a central four-pane sash window is flanked by blind panels with sills that step down. The building has a moulded eaves cornice and a pediment. Stepped and corniced brick chimneys project towards the rear of each return.

The tall walls, topped with flat stone coping, have buttresses flanking the cottage. On either side, there are late 19th-century sash windows set under flat gauged brick arches. Stout buttresses are present at the ends and to the rear of the building.
