Description
WALLINGTON DEMESNE WALLINGTON NZ 0384 21/213 Walled garden with gateways II* Garden walls and gateways, thought to be by Lancelot Brown c. 1766, except for south-east gate of 1905. Brick walls in English Garden Wall bond with stone dressings and wrought-iron gates. Roughly kidney-shaped plan with two gateways on west and one on south-east. Tall walls with flat stone coping; several busts set on wall tops at east end of garden. West wall with later internal stone buttresses; Neptune gate to right has Gibbs surround with block above carrying lead statue, and open-panelled gate with scrolled ironwork. Garden Gate to left has piers with moulded plinths and attached jambs; corniced caps with stepped plinths to flattened ball finials with spikes, on swept bases. South-east gate has cruciform piers with banded rustication and attached jambs; moulded caps with urns. Openwork gates with scrolled decoration.
Pent sheds against external face of north wall flanking Owl House (q.v.) not of interest.
