Description

The walled garden at Wallington Demesne, dating from around 1766 and attributed to Lancelot Brown, features garden walls and gateways, with the south-east gate added in 1905. The brick walls are constructed in English Garden Wall bond and include stone dressings and wrought-iron gates. The garden has a roughly kidney-shaped layout, with two gateways on the west side and one on the south-east. The tall walls have flat stone coping and several busts placed on the wall tops at the east end of the garden.

The west wall includes later internal stone buttresses. The Neptune gate on the right features a Gibbs surround with a block above that supports a lead statue, along with an open-panelled gate adorned with scrolled ironwork. The Garden Gate on the left has piers with moulded plinths and attached jambs, topped with corniced caps and stepped plinths that support flattened ball finials with spikes on swept bases. The south-east gate is distinguished by cruciform piers with banded rustication and attached jambs, along with moulded caps that feature urns. The openwork gates are decorated with scrolled designs.

There are pent sheds against the external face of the north wall flanking the Owl House, which are not of interest.
