Description

The outbuildings and yard walls to the north of the Garden House at Wallington Demesne date from 1766. They are constructed of squared stone with stone dressings and feature slate roofs. The layout includes a rectangular yard with a stable block to the north and a smaller yard beyond.

The south elevation of the stable block is one storey high and has three bays. Each bay contains a boarded door set in a chamfered surround, with the outer bays projecting forward and topped with pyramidal roofs that have flattened ball finials and spikes on swept bases. The returns of the stable block feature quatrefoil windows, and there are 20th-century double doors in the left return. The rear elevation displays a central 12-pane Yorkshire sash window in a stone surround, with a boarded window in a hipped half dormer above, along with three boarded doors and slit vents.

The yard walls have flat coping, and there is a mounting block against the internal face of the west wall. In the north-west corner of the smaller yard, there is a pair of pigsties with a henhouse above, which includes two low sty doorways and a small window with vertical glazing bars above. The gabled right return features a raised boarded door.

This site is an early example of a small-scale planned farm layout.
