Description
The garden walls, gates, and urns located south of Woodlands at Thornbridge Hall were built around 1903. They are constructed from limestone rubble with gritstone dressings and wrought iron elements. The entrance features plain square stone piers on either side, each topped with urn finials that are fluted at the base and adorned with foliage swags and horseshoe motifs. The central double gates have arrowheads at the base, vertical bars above, and scroll decorations on the sides and center, with curling scrolls at the top. Fixed gates on either side match this style.
To the west, there is a curved and stepped rubble wall with moulded copings extending southward. To the east, a similar wall curves around the garden to the north and includes a Tudor-style gateway located approximately 6 meters to the north. This gateway features a four-centre arch incised into the lintel and moulded jambs, topped with stepped parapets.
Directly north of the gates, low attached walls lead to a short flight of steps, with short rubble piers on either side topped by large ball finials. Further north, there is a line of three pairs of urns along the drive, each resting on a plain pier. The urns have elaborate fluted and scrolled bases, fluted sides decorated with figure scenes, and bell-like lids topped with flame finials.
