Description

Woodlands is an entrance lodge for Thornbridge Hall, built around 1903-1904 in a neo-Tudor style. The building is constructed from coursed squared limestone with gritstone dressings and quoins, topped with plain tile roofs. It features moulded stone coped gables and several diamond-sectioned stone side wall stacks.

The structure is two storeys high, except for the towers, and has a U-shaped plan with a four-bay central section flanked by lower two-storey, two-bay wings. The south elevation showcases a large central 4-centred archway, with octagonal towers on either side. The western tower includes a doorcase with a moulded lintel, and there are 3-light, double transomed, mullion windows beside the towers, with a similar window to the west. Above these, there are matching windows in the same arrangement. A stringcourse runs over the arch and continues around the towers, which display a coat of arms and two 2-light mullion windows above. The towers are topped with a corbelled parapet featuring semi-circular headed crenellations, and they also have oval windows, stringcourses, and castellations.

To the east, the lower wing has a 3-light mullion and transom window, with a door set at an angle featuring a bracketed hood and moulded architrave, alongside a single light window. An advanced bay to the south includes a two-storey canted bay window with mullion windows both below and above. Above the door, there are two gabled dormers with 2-light mullion windows, one with a pediment and the other with a Dutch gable. The wing to the west mirrors the one to the east, and all the windows feature leaded lights.
