Description

Stoney Ley Lodge is a lodge house built around 1845 for the Thornhill family of Stanton Hall. It is constructed from coursed, squared gritstone with gritstone dressings and quoins. The stone slate roofs feature moulded stone copings on the gables, plain kneelers, and ornate ridge finials. On the south side, there is a large external stack with a cross, an arrow slit window near the base, and a bracketed pot with a flared top, which is pierced by elongated trefoils. The building has a bold, coved eaves cornice and is designed in the Tudor style with a cruciform plan, spanning two storeys.

The original entrance is located on the west side, featuring steps leading up to a cavetto moulded, four-centred arched flush doorcase with a hoodmould, although this entrance is now partly blocked and filled by a 20th-century window. Flanking the entrance are cross arrow slit windows. Above the door, there is a single light recessed and ovolo moulded window with a hoodmould and gothic traceried lights. The south elevation has an advanced central bay with a canted bay window, which includes a coved cornice and single light recessed and ovolo moulded windows with gothic traceried glazing on either side. The advanced external stack is also located on the south side. Above the bay window, there is a 2-light recessed and ovolo moulded window with a hoodmould and similar glazing to the windows below. In the gable above, there is a terracotta plaque depicting a running stag, framed by a large hoodmould. The east elevation is similar to the west, while the north elevation mirrors the southern one.
