Description
East Lodge to Thornbury Castle is an entrance lodge with attached outbuildings, built around 1855. The structure is made of rubble limestone with ashlar dressings and features a clay tile roof with limestone and red brick stacks. Inside, there are stone fireplaces, a stone stair, and timber window shutters.
The building has an L-plan layout, with the outbuildings located to the east. It is a single-storey building with an attic floor, showcasing Tudor Gothic detailing. This includes single and two-light, four-centred arch-headed casements with hood moulds and stone relieving arches. The south elevation, which faces the carriageway to the east, is three bays wide. The left section of the lodge projects towards the road and features a gable end with coped verges and kneelers. There is a central plank door beneath a four-centred arch head, with single light openings to the right. The corner of this elevation is canted and has a carved stone corbel with a single-light opening below. The east gable end has a two-light casement on each floor, with ashlar diamond stacks on the north roof slope behind. The west elevation includes a gable end on the left and a central lateral stack made of stone and red brick. A range of single-storey stone outbuildings extends to the west, featuring modern roofing and abutting the walls of Thornbury Castle.
A central stone stair remains in place, although an internal inspection was not conducted.
