Description
The retaining wall and grottos in the gardens at Thornbridge Hall date from the late 19th century and are constructed of stone. The retaining wall is approximately ninety yards long and made of rubble stone, featuring seven urns placed on rusticated ashlar piers. The urns come in two alternating designs. To the south, there is an urn on a polygonal table and a castellated grotto, which has steps leading down to a lower level. This lower level includes a half-domed opening with a stone seat. To the southeast, there is a rustic grotto made of massive tufa blocks, which includes a stone bench adorned with festoons of fruit on the backrest.
