Description

The Old Post Office is an early 19th-century building of group value, originally two storeys with an attic and basement, and featuring a 1+3+1 window arrangement. The building is constructed of ashlar, with a slight projection of the central three bays, topped by a pediment. A moulded eaves cornice runs around the building, and it has a slate roof with coped verges; only one kneeler remains on the left side. There is one original brick chimney on the ridge, and a more recent chimney is located behind the pediment. Two small windows are set within the pediment itself. The other windows are glazing bar sashes with moulded architraves; the first-floor windows have alternate triangular and segmental pediments, while the ground-floor windows, except for the two right-hand windows, have flat pediments. The two right-hand ground floor windows have plate glass lower sashes. A large, projecting, pedimented portico with Doric columns, approached by steps, is centrally located and provides access to a six-panel door. To the left of the portico is a large semi-circular archway leading to a cobbled passage with double doors. The rear of the building features raised window surrounds.
