Description

St Michael's Pant is a Grade II* listed structure located on the south side of Market Street, in front of Nos 33 and 35. Built in 1765 by Matthew Mills and designed by Mr. Bell, it features a 'Gothick' style. The pant has a high square base with blind cusped pointed arches on each face, and set-back angle buttresses that also have blind pointed arches topped with cusped finials. It includes a moulded cornice with a quatrefoil and a blind tracery parapet. At the top, there is a representation of St Michael and the Dragon, which is the symbol of the town, situated on a traceried octagonal drum. This figure is missing a spear and carries a shield with a cross patonce. Additionally, there is a worn gargoyle that serves as a water spout into a large square trough.
