Description

A terrace of four houses with attached walls, built around 1880. They were likely constructed by Joseph Kyle. The houses are in the Gothic Revival style and are built with thin courses of squared stone, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings. The roofs are of Welsh slate with stone gable copings and chimneys. The terrace has two storeys and an 8-window range. There are steps leading to the doors in the second, third, fifth, and seventh bays. These doors have diagonally-boarded panels set within elaborate frames, topped by shaped overlights. The stone door surrounds have wide chamfers with broach stops and Tudor heads below relieving arches. The ground-floor canted bay windows have zigzag-cut heads and cornices with shaped heads to the plain sash windows. These bays have hipped roofs. The first-floor sash windows are narrower above the doorways and are set in chamfered stone surrounds with low segmental heads. Dormers are above the canted bays, featuring shouldered heads to plain sashes in stone surrounds under steeply pitched gables. All gables have stone coping resting on corbelled kneelers. The tall transverse-ridge chimneys at the canted bay side of each house have steep stone coping. The interior was not inspected. Walls to the street, built of coursed squared stone with ashlar copings and piers, are approximately 8 meters high, with chamfered coping and returns along the left and right sides to a ramped section adjoining the front of the terrace. Tall stone piers, made from single blocks, are located at the corners and at the entrance to each house, featuring a square base, reducing to stopped chamfers forming octagonal shafts with domed stepped heads. The buildings are included in the listing for their group value.
