Description

No. 2 and 4 Newgate is a house that has been converted into a shop and flat. It dates from the early 18th century, with an early 20th-century shop front. The exterior features painted incised stucco with painted ashlar dressings, and the roof is covered with asbestos slates designed to resemble Welsh slate. The building has a steeply pitched roof with stone gable copings and brick chimneys, and it stands two storeys tall with a three-window range.

The front wall has a noticeable batter. To the left of the centre, there is a recessed door with a painted tooled stone surround and a plain overlight above. The shop on the left has a high rendered stall-riser, a two-pane front window, and three-pane transom lights. Smaller windows in the same style continue around the left return, along with a plain canted fascia board. All windows have plain reveals. To the right of the door, there are paired plain square lights, and on the first floor, there are three plain sash windows, with a small blocked attic light above the third. A 20th-century flat-headed two-light dormer is located to the left of centre.

The roof features end chimneys made of old brick, with stone gable coping at the left rear and at the right near the chimney. There is a left front moulded kneeler and an urn-shaped rainwater head below the eaves on the right. The left return has a shop window on the ground floor, a single sash window above, and two small attic lights with plain glazing. The interior has not been inspected. The building is included for its group value.
