Description
12 and 14 Newgate is a house and shop, now two houses, dating from the early 19th century. The building is constructed from herringbone tooled coursed squared sandstone, featuring rusticated ashlar quoins, and has a painted ashlar plinth and dressings. The right side of the building has exposed rubble due to the demolition of an adjacent structure. The roof is made of graduated stone slates, with stone gable copings and stone chimneys.
The building is two storeys high and has a three-window range. The doors, which have been renewed, alternate with windows and are framed by painted stone surrounds. No. 12 features four-pane sashes, while No. 14 has plain sashes, both with similar stone surrounds. On the left side, there is a shop window that is a shallow square bay window, supported by slender angle pilasters and a central mullion, topped by a deep fascia that overlaps with Regency oval paterae from an earlier fascia. The low-pitched roof has moulded kneelers and features chimneys at the central and right ridges, which have plinths, top bands, and rendered additions. The interior has not been inspected.
