Description
This is a pair of houses located at 19 and 21 Newgate in Barnard Castle, built in the mid-18th century with some early 19th-century alterations. The houses are constructed from coursed squared stone with irregular quoins and ashlar dressings. They feature a roof made of stone slates, with stone gable copings and chimneys that are a mix of brick and rendered materials. The buildings are two storeys high and have a two-window range.
The paired central doors are designed with two long panels and small overlights, set within a doorcase that includes pilasters, architrave heads, and quasi-pediment lintels with cornices. There is a blank space above the doors. The windows have plain stone surrounds, with the four-pane sashes on the ground floor and the left side of the first floor having deeper tooled lintels. The second-floor windows have their sills lowered and small jamb blocks inserted to accommodate larger windows. The roof features a stone ridge and gable copings, although the kneelers have been lost. The left end chimney is rendered, while the right end chimney is made of yellow brick. The interior has not been inspected.
