Description

31 Newgate is a house located in Barnard Castle, built in the mid-18th century with alterations made around 1900. The structure is constructed from coursed squared stone with pecked quoins and ashlar dressings, while the right side is rendered. The roof is covered with Welsh slate, featuring a stone ridge and stone gable copings, along with brick chimneys. The house has two storeys and a three-window range.

The central entrance consists of a six-panel door with a plain overlight, set within a plain stone surround. This surround has been modified around 1900, with the lintel raised and short stone jamb pieces added to fit the overlight. The ground floor windows are plain sashes, dating from around 1900, and are paired, featuring chamfered stone mullions and lintels, as well as projecting stone sills. The first-floor windows have plain stone surrounds from the 18th century.

The roof includes cyma-moulded kneelers that support the gable copings, although the roof pitch is no longer aligned with the copings. There are end brick chimneys. The right side of the house has two ground-floor sash windows and one above, all in plain stone surrounds, along with similar surrounds for small lights in the rear wing, which has a low-pitched hipped roof. The interior has not been inspected.
