Description
The former stable and coachhouse, now used as a garage and storage shed, dates from the mid-18th century. It is constructed of stone rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, topped with a roof of pantiles featuring two rows of stone slates at the eaves. The building is single-storey and consists of three bays. The west front facing Wood Street has a segmental arch with voussoirs. To the right, there are double boarded doors beneath an old oak lintel, and at the right end, a single boarded door with a vent slit between. The left bay is blind. The left side has an oak lintel above a boarded door, while the right side has inserted double vehicle doors. The roof structure and covering have been entirely removed from the central bay. The interior has not been inspected. Historical map evidence suggests that this building may have served as the stable and coachhouse for the previous house at Nos 42 and 44 Newgate, of which an 18th-century rear wing still exists.
