Description

This is an early 19th-century house located on the south side of Newgate in Barnard Castle. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with painted ashlar dressings, and has a roof of renewed stone slates with stone gable copings and chimneys. The house is two stories high with a three-window front. The central entrance features a six-panel door and overlight with glazing bars, set within a surround of pilasters and an entablature. Four-pane sash windows are found in ground-floor canted bay windows, featuring cornices, and in first-floor windows with flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills. Eaves gutter corbels are present at the ends of the building and flanking each window. The roof has plain gable copings with chamfered feet resting on moulded kneelers. The end chimneys have plinths and top bands. A narrow sash window is on each floor of the left return, set in a painted surround. The interior of the house has not been inspected.
