Description
42 and 44 Newgate are a pair of houses built in 1826. They are constructed from ashlar stone and feature a plinth and rusticated quoins. The houses have a slate roof with stone gable copings and chimneys. They are two storeys high and have a five-window range. Each house has a six-panel door with an overlight; the door for No. 42 has patterned glazing bars and is located in the second and fourth bays, framed by pilasters and an entablature. The windows have projecting stone surrounds, with 16-pane sashes, and there is a blocked window above the door of No. 44. The low-pitched roof includes prominent moulded kneelers and ridge chimneys positioned at the left and centre, both with plinths and top bands. Below the central first-floor window, there is an elliptical date stone with a well-cut inscription reading "W & M A 1826." The interior has not been inspected.
