Description

This is a house located at 23 Newgate in Barnard Castle, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of coursed squared stone, featuring projecting ashlar quoins and painted ashlar dressings. The roof has been renewed, possibly with synthetic stone slates, and includes stone gable copings and 20th-century brick chimneys. The building has two storeys and a three-window range. There is a step up to the central four-panel door, which has central beading and a plain overlight, all set in a plain stone surround beneath a gabled timber hood supported by shaped brackets. The windows are four-pane sashes in painted plain stone surrounds. The low-pitched roof has gable copings that rest on moulded kneelers, with brick chimneys at each end. The interior has not been inspected.
