Description
The Maltings is an early 19th-century maltings building located in Barnard Castle. It is constructed of rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, topped by a hipped roof made of large slates with stone ridges. The building stands at the rear of the yard to No. 13, which is not included in this listing.
The south elevation, which faces the churchyard of St Mary's, is three stories tall with a basement and features a five-window range. All openings are small and square, with flat stone lintels. The basement has low openings with vertical bars, while the ground floor includes glazing and horizontal bars. The first floor has three evenly spaced four-pane vertical sliding sash windows, and the second floor has one similar window at the left end and another with a top-hinged shutter at the right end.
On the left side of the building, there are steps leading to a door at the first-floor level. The elevation facing the yard has a blocked basement opening, a basement door with a plain stone surround, and various openings, including two horizontal-sliding sash windows and inserted loading doors, with the lower door accessed by a concrete ramp. The interior has not been inspected.
