Description

The garden walls to the east of numbers 64 and 66, Spring Grove, are a Grade II listed structure located in Barnard Castle. These walls, originally part of the garden for the 18th-century Parsonage House, feature a design that includes walls and piers surrounding three sides of the garden. The walls are primarily constructed of rubble with ashlar coping and piers, and there is a brick leaf at the rear. The square piers along Newgate have stop-chamfered edges with roll-moulded stops and stepped shaped coping. The wall has flat stone copings, which are lower to the left of the piers and feature 20th-century wrought-iron railings, while the right side is higher and ramps up to mid-first floor height at the rear where it connects to the rear wing of number 66. The wall curves around a corner to Birch Road and connects to another wall on the west side of Birch Road. A wrought-iron gate, installed around 1971, features a scrolled leaf and flower design. These walls are included for their group value, reflecting their historical context as part of the former Parsonage House garden, which was depicted on a map from 1827.
