Description

The entrance gateway to Dunelm Court, along with the lodge, dates back to 1864 and was originally part of the former barracks of the Durham Militia, which have since been demolished. The gateway and lodge are constructed from snecked stone, featuring a coped rubble plinth and ashlar dressings. The lodge has a roof made of fishscale grey and green slates, with stone gable copings and a stone chimney. The wall is also made of snecked stone, topped with ashlar coping.

The gateway is designed in the Tudor style, characterized by two square turrets that flank a wide flat Tudor arch. This arch displays arms and mottos in high relief beneath a stepped gabled coping with a central raised section. The turrets feature narrow Tudor open arches below inset panels displaying arms and insignia, and they are topped with battlemented parapets.

A high wall extending from the left turret forms a quadrant that leads to the street front of No.1 Dunelm Court. This building is a single storey with three windows: two sashes with glazing bars and a small square light with four panes, all set in chamfered stone surrounds. The roof has end gable copings on corbelled block kneelers and a square central ridge chimney with a plinth and cornice. The right return of the building includes a coped rubble plinth, two sashes, and a blind cross slit under the gable.

On the inner face facing Dunelm Court green, there are boarded doors on the left and to the right of center, a sash with glazing bars next to the first door, and a three-light overlight in a stone surround above the second door. The quadrant wall is approximately 2.5 meters high and features gabled coping.
