Description
The war memorial, located approximately 32 metres west of the west lodge to Bowes Museum, was erected around 1919 for the Durham Militia. It is constructed of ashlar, likely sandstone, and features an octagonal plan. The memorial stands on three high steps leading to a chamfered base with a carved laurel wreath. The slender tapered shaft is about 2 metres high and has broach-stopped chamfers and battlemented coping. At the top, a stone crucifix rises, with the cross featuring decorated arms. An inscription on the front of the cross honors the men of all ranks of the Durham Militia who died between 1914 and 1918, while the rear displays 'DLI' (Durham Light Infantry) along with the regimental badge.
