Description

Spring Lodge Cottage is a mid-19th century garden house and outhouse, originally serving Spring Lodge. The building is constructed of snecked stone with ashlar dressings and Welsh slate roofs featuring terra cotta ridge tiles. The walls are of rubble with ashlar coping, complemented by wrought-iron railings and a stone pier.

The two-storey cottage has a three-window front facing Newgate. It features plain sash windows with flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills. A central stair window is positioned on the first floor, flanked by round-headed sashes, also with projecting sills, set within keyed round surrounds that rise through dormers. These dormers have deeply projecting eaves and shaped bargeboards topped with tall spike finials. End chimneys are present, with bands at the top.

A single-storey outhouse is attached to the right, presenting a blank façade to the road. The elevation facing the garden has a central door with an overlight, flanked by sash windows; the first floor is blank. The outhouse has a renewed central door and flanking windows.

The interior has not been inspected. The enclosing wall has gabled coping on the left side, and returns along the south elevation. A lower section of wall contains plain round iron railings and posts with ball finials. A short section extends forward to form a tapered square pier with a chamfered top, creating an entrance to the drive towards a coachhouse. This pier is connected to the garden wall, marking the boundary of the ancillary buildings associated with Spring Lodge and facing the Lodges of the Bowes Museum across Newgate. The building is included on the list for group value.
