Description
The war memorial, located approximately 32 meters east of the east lodge to Bowes Museum, was erected around 1919 to commemorate those who died in the First World War. It is constructed from marble, limestone, and granite, featuring a square plan. The memorial is accessed by five steps leading up to a square plinth with a tapered base and corniced coping. A carved laurel wreath is displayed in raised segments on the coping. The obelisk shaft stands about 2 meters high on the coping. The names of the fallen are inscribed on a slab set against the steps at an oblique angle, as well as on the base, which includes an inscription honoring the men of all ranks from Barnard Castle who died between 1914 and 1918.
