Description

No. 52 and 52A on Galgate is a shop and flat built around 1870. The building features thin courses of rock-faced stone and a roof made of thin stone slates, complete with stone ridges and chimneys. It stands two storeys high with an attic and has a single-window range.

On the ground floor, there is a full-width modillioned entablature supported by slender round pilasters. To the left, the shop front includes stone stall-risers and a stone step leading to a central recessed partly-glazed panelled door with an overlight. To the right, there is a four-panel house door with its own overlight.

The first floor has a central canted bay that rests on the shop entablature and features sash windows set in segmental-headed frames, topped by a cornice that supports a hipped roof. The roof also includes a gabled dormer with shaped and pierced bargeboards and a spike finial, along with two-pane casement windows. A chimney with coping is located at the left end. The interior has not been inspected. This building is included for its group value.
