Description
This is a mid-18th century house, originally part of a larger complex. The building is constructed of rough render with painted ashlar dressings, and has a roof of thin stone slates with a stone ridge and a rubble chimney. It comprises two distinct builds. The left-hand section is taller, with two storeys and a single-window elevation. The right-hand section is lower, with two storeys and a single-window range. The taller section features a six-panel door within a painted, tooled stone surround, topped by a hood. To the left of the door is a round window (oeil-de-boeuf) set within a painted, moulded stone surround. The first floor has a sash window with glazing bars, a painted flat lintel, and a thin sill. The lower section has a central round window (oeil-de-boeuf) on the ground floor, a wooden-framed boarded door with a floating three-pane overlight to the right, and a sash window with glazing bars to the left. The ground floor also has a four-pane sash window to the left. A tall stone chimney with flat coping rises from the centre of the front slope of the lower section, while another chimney penetrates the eaves of the hipped roof of the taller section. The interior has not been inspected. In 1760, the taller section was part of The Grove, the home of William Hutchinson, F.S.A. (1732-1814), historian of County Durham.
