Description

No. 57 Galgate is a house that was formerly part of a larger complex, possibly a stable block, and is believed to date from 1760. The exterior features painted rough render with painted ashlar dressings, and the roof is covered with synthetic tiles and Welsh slate, topped with rendered chimneys. The building has two storeys and a three-window range. It includes six-panel doors set in plain stone surrounds between the windows. A central round-arched stair window with imposts and arched glazing bars is a notable feature, along with a small round window at the right end in a plain stone surround. There are also small four-pane lights at the eaves on both ends, each with flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills. The roof has a central raised hipped section that rises from the front slope, complete with a weather-vane finial, and there are ridge chimneys on the left and near-right sides.

Inside, there is a stone stair along the front wall with two landings, featuring a plain wrought-iron handrail and balusters. On the first floor, the iron rail is integrated into the newel of the gallery balustrade, which has column balusters and a grip handrail typical of the mid to late 18th century. The rear ground floor includes a canted bay window that overlooks the garden, adorned with raised fielded panelling.

Historically, this house was part of the home of William Hutchinson, a historian of County Durham, during the 18th century. In the 20th century, it became the residence of C.N. Parkinson, known for "Parkinson's Law," while he served as the art master at Barnard Castle School.
